About us

Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka was founded on September 3rd 1984 through a merger of five hospitals: the Braće Dr. Sobol General Hospital, the Dr Zdravko Kučić General Hospital, the Kantrida Children’s Hospital, the Kraljevica Orthopaedic Hospital and the Pulmonary Diseases Ičići Clinical Hospital. Today it is one of the five clinical hospital centres in Croatia and the key hospital facility in this part of Croatia.

Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka represents a teaching and scientific research base of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Studies and Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Rijeka. It encompasses 18 clinics, 6 clinical institutes, 6 independent institutes, one independent department and a hospital pharmacy operating in two localities. The vision is to unite Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka in one location, which would significantly improve working conditions of the staff, as well as offer benefit to the patients.

The Clinic for Cardiovascular Diseases, Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine and Pain Management, Clinic for Dermatovenerology, Clinic for Paediatrics, Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Clinic for Infectious Diseases, Clinic for Internal Medicine, Clinic for Surgery, Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinic for Neurosurgery, Clinic for Paediatric Surgery, Clinic for Neurology, Clinic for Ophthalmology, Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Clinic for Psychiatry, Clinic for Dental Medicine, Clinic for Urology, Clinic for Radiotherapy and Oncology, Clinical Institute of Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics, Clinical Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Institute of Radiology, Clinical Institute of Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Institute of Pathology and Cytology, Institute of Medical Physics and Radiation Protection, Institute of Integrated and Palliative Care, Department of Audiology And Phoniatrics, Department of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Department of Clinical, Health and Organizational Psychology, General Emergency Hospital Admission, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Hospital Pharmacy.

The staff consists of more than 3,400 employees, of which about 500 are doctors (27 medical specialties), over 1,200 are nurses, another 500 belong to other health fields (pharmacists, medical engineers, physiotherapists, psychologists, speech therapists, biologists, physicists, pharmaceutical technicians, laboratory technicians), and the remaining over 150 are residents. The total floor space of the Centre is 206,000 m2, of which 84,000 m2 is usable area within 46 hospital buildings. There are 1,069 beds, of which 60 in the intensive care units, 28 in the emergency medical ward, 24 surgical rooms and 197 in outpatient clinics.

The institutions the Centre cooperates with are primarily the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka, the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Rijeka, the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Rijeka, the School of Medicine in Rijeka, the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance, the Teaching Institute for Public Health, the Community Health Center of the Primorje – Gorski Kotar County, the Institution for emergency medical assistance, the Lovran Orthopaedic Hospital, the Rab Psychiatric Hospital and the Lopača Psychiatric Hospital. Scientific research and clinical trials take place through funded projects, and are reviewed by any of the 12 reference centres of the Ministry of Health of Croatia.
